When AI Reads the Web for Us
Google's AI search is changing the relationship between people, information and websites. It is another step toward a digital world in which AI not only generates answers but increasingly takes over access to information.
Google confirms for the first time that the growing use of its AI Mode is slowing the growth of advertising revenue. Classic search, with its links and ads, is increasingly supplemented and in part replaced by directly generated AI answers.
But as DER STANDARD analyzes, the real loser could be the open web [1]: When AI systems summarize information directly, people no longer need to visit the original web pages themselves.
This reflects a development we have already observed in Indication No. 14: “Meine Nachrichten werden nicht von mir gelesen” [2]. It concerns AI agents that process news on behalf of people. In search, AI is increasingly taking on a similar mediating role.
What happens to the internet when fewer and fewer people navigate it themselves and AI systems increasingly take over this task?
