Post-Generative

BrünnerEbnerLeitnerSchön

Everyday life permeated by generative AI.

Post-generative describes a societal condition in which generative artificial intelligence permeates everyday life. It shapes how people work, learn, communicate, design and produce knowledge. Its outputs enter the information, tools and environments we encounter every day, affecting even those who do not consciously use it.

Human and machine contributions become intertwined and increasingly difficult to distinguish. AI outputs are increasingly adopted or passed on without people reviewing them individually. The volume and speed of generation can overwhelm human oversight.

Why “post”?

Drawing on the idea of the post-digital, the post-generative describes a world already transformed by generative AI. Its possibilities, expectations and conflicts are shaped by that transformation. Here, “post” describes life under these changed conditions: generative AI becomes commonplace and often works in the background.

What becomes visible in everyday life?

AI co-writes texts, generates images and supports scholarly knowledge work. Institutions adapt their practices. One possible outcome is tools that emerge at the moment of need: software on the fly. Interpreting the present as post-generative is our thesis; these developments offer indications.

A term with a history

A related formulation was documented at Kyoto University in 2025: .

The English announcement refers to a “Post-Generative AI Inclusive Society”. Here, we develop our own societal definition by analogy with the post-digital. This does not establish first coinage or a Japanese origin of the term.
