When AI grades are accepted without checking

Seven percent of surveyed teachers in Germany have used AI for grading without checking the result, according to Bitkom. DER STANDARD’s report highlights the delegation of school assessment to AI.

DER STANDARD reports on a Bitkom survey: one in five surveyed teachers uses AI to check assignments and exams; seven percent have already accepted AI-generated grades without checking them. [1]

The telephone survey, described as representative, covered 501 lower- and upper-secondary teachers in Germany during calendar weeks 22–26 of 2026. These are self-reported uses, rather than evidence of AI grading quality. [2]

Meanwhile, only 57 percent report clear school rules for AI; 51 percent feel overwhelmed by it. [1]

Our interpretation: this example shows AI reaching into assessment itself. It raises questions about combining workload relief, explainable decisions and human responsibility.
