When the President Asks the Chatbot
Two leading U.S. Democrats are demanding that President Trump preserve his conversations with AI chatbots. The move follows reports that he consulted Grok about a military operation in Venezuela.
On October 29, 2026, Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, the top Democrats on the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, called on the White House to preserve all prompts and responses from conversations with Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity made in the course of official duties [1][2]. The trigger was reporting that President Trump had sought advice from Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok in connection with U.S. military actions in Venezuela [2].
The lawmakers argue that such exchanges could count as presidential records, that is, official government documents. They are requesting a briefing by November 11 [3]. The White House said it preserves all records required by law [1]. For now, the two cannot enforce their demand: as members of the minority, they lack subpoena power. The letter is therefore also seen as a preview of what would be a priority if Democrats win a majority in the midterms [4].
The case raises a new question: when generative AI feeds into decisions that affect millions of people, including military ones, who can trace how much of a role it played? Whether the reports are accurate remains open. That parliaments are beginning to treat AI prompts as part of government action is already an indication.
